Unova’s elemental monkey Pokémon get English names

Pokémon Black and White‘s box now has a backside, and it confirms some new information. As you can see, both Team Plasma and N retain the names they go by in the Japanese versions of the games. The battle screenshot above reveals the English names for the elemental monkey trio as follows: the grass monkey Yanappu is now known as Pansage, the fire monkey Baoppu is Pansear, and the water monkey Hiyappu will go by Panpour.

What’s the meaning behind those names? Well, “Pan” is the genus name for monkeys and chimps. “Sage” is a spice, which makes sense for the grass Pokémon, to “sear” something means to burn or scorch its surface, and you “pour” liquids such as water. On top of that, the gym leader trio that commands these Pokémon early in the game and in the anime are all restaurant waiters.
