Harmonix, a subsidiary of MTV Games and owned by parent company Viacom, will soon be without ownership, as Viacom announced plans to sell off the development studio.
No reason was given, making the announcement quite surprising given the great success Harmonix has seen, especially in the last month with their critically acclaimed multi-platform music title Rock Band 3 and Kinect boogie game Dance Central.
Rock Band 3 was heavily promoted as the company’s definitive music rhythm game, countering Activision’s strategy of releasing annual Guitar Hero titles. Possibly a slow down in their music game initiative made Harmonix less attractive.
