Shigeru Miyamoto reveals his favorite Mario game

Can you guess what Shigeru Miyamoto’s personal favorite Mario game is? When asked by USA Today, the Nintendo mastermind readily answered Super Mario World, explaining:

“Super Mario World is something that included of course all the action you saw in Super Mario Bros…(but) it also had the map features, so it also had that element of players having to think about where they were going and what they were going to do next. I also think that it is a game that developed a large number of staff people who became producers and directors.”

Makes somewhat sense from his perspective I suppose, but I think I’ll personally prefer Super Mario Bros. 3 for its replay value alone (read: Super Mario World was too hard). Which was your favorite?

Yeah, I agree. Super Mario 3 was a pretty great game all around.

What about that final level in Super Mario World? Was that not CRAZY?! I loved it!

Too hard? If you are just talking about beating the game, SMW is way easier than 3, which, even exploiting whistles, makes you beat the entire World 8. In SMW you have to get through World 1, and then use the quick star shortcut to the final castle, not difficult at all. Now the Special World is WAY more difficult than anything in 3, but it is completely optional, which is exactly where you want difficulty; there's no reason that you would want that removed from the game. It is the perfect reward for the grinders who want to their skills tested to the limits.

The phrase “too hard” was used in jest to make fun of myself. Lighten up.

Ha, ok. Subtle sarcasm strikes again.

Ah, I was wondering what you were on. SMB3 was too hard for me, to the point where the game wasn't fun. SMW was just right, and the level design was better.

But uh…, Mr. Miyamoto, are you sure you're not talking about SMB3? Because that was the first Mario game with a map.
