Sonic Fan Remix (the unofficial Sonic game) has a demo

Remember that video we showed you of a fan-created HD sidescrolling Sonic the Hedgehog game? Originally, it was made only as a video and not a playable demo. Overwhelmingly positive fan reaction changed that however, as creators Pelikan13 and Mercury set out to make a fully playable game all in 2.5D HD goodness.

In steps Sonic Fan Remix, the delightful new game that will easily give Sonic the Hedgehog 4 a run for its money. Everything from the lighting effects, to the rain and accompanying sound effects all work together cohesively, looking more like a year long project from a top team of developers. It’s hard to tell which of the two games is really the better game, that is until you play them both. Luckily, a three level download of the new fan Sonic game is available for download for free!

I'm very excited by this. I bought and played Sonic 4 recently, and while I was pleased with the return to the classic gameplay, I felt it lacked a lot of the polish and detail that I would have expected.

This project looks very appealing in that regard – it takes the richness of Sonic's worlds to heart.
However, I hope the creators are mindful of maintaining proper contrast. The Mushroom Hill video was very successful in using fog/depth of field, selective value range and contrast, and surface patterns/moving shapes either much smaller or much larger than Sonic, to keep the game world easy to parse visually. The new video mixes together lots of content within the same tonal range and scale as Sonic, which risks visual cacophony. (Mind you, I love the look of each piece of content in itself)
