Rumor: Nintendo to host event for big Wii announcement?

Update: Nintendo responded, claiming rumors of an upcoming event are not true.

Original Post: After the stress of staying up until 1am, anxiously awaiting details of Nintendo’s 3DS handheld earlier this week, I don’t think I could deal with another big event. If the latest rumor is true, I may not have a choice.

Word on the street is the Big N is preparing another event, this time focusing on an announcement for their Wii console. Some theorize the Wii Vitality Sensor could be the topic of conversation. Considering we haven’t heard a word about it in over a year, I think that’s a good guess. The “event’ is planned for October 11th.

Until an official confirmation, let’s classify this as a rumor.

Even if the Vitality Sensor hasn't already been shelved indefinitely, it doesn't seem important enough to warrant an announcement event on its own. Likewise, Wii Speak, Wii MotionPlus, and Wii Balance Board didn't apply to a wide enough library of games, and were thus side announcements at larger events…

The hint was that the announcement would likely “make those who have sold their Wiis want to rebuy one” — suggesting the announcement is probably AAA-software related. Something like Wii-HD doesn't fit the hint, as it would justify those who sold their consoles and make *current* owners want to rebuy. Extra peripherals such as the Vitality Sensor are a significant barrier, especially to current non-Wii owners.

Blockbuster software on the magnitude of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Super Mario Collection, or a huge third party franchise that typically doesn't see release on Nintendo consoles would be more likely candidates as system-sellers. Still, even a single game doesn't seem to justify a separate announcement event…

    Something fishy is going on.

Although I was 94% sure the Vitality Sensor was canned, it seems plausible the event could be to showcase it. After all, you'd need some sort of event to explain what it does, and what software you're going to sell with it. A “Wii Health” game bundled with an odd finger attachment wouldn't really sell with a simple press release or trailer.

And with all the big software titles announced at E3, I'm skeptical of any additional software announcements in 2010 geared towards the core gamer. Guess we'll see soon!
