The jury is still out on whether or not 3D console gaming — you know, the kind with the glasses — will be a success or not. Visually, I felt WipEout HD in 3D on PS3 was nothing special. There is one thing that is beyond clear, however. Killzone 3 in 3D offers the most immersive gameplay FPS experience I’ve ever seen.
Sony’s E3 press briefing kicked off last week with a lengthy gameplay demo of Killzone 3. Everyone in attendance, including a few of us at The Tanooki, were right there at the Shrine Auditorium for the show. As we donned our special 3D glasses, the Killzone 3 goodness began. To me, the 3D effects rivaled that of Avatar, bringing the vivid war-zone to life. As the game’s protagonist motioned through gunfire and explosions across the scenic locale, my jaw dropped. Especially enticing was the inclusion of a machine gun-totting jetpack. As Sev blasts off from a ledge, you can see his feet dangling below. It’s the little things like that which allow 3D to really shine.
Take a look at the trailer for Killzone 3. While it may not be in 3D, I implore you to watch while considering the possibilities of gaming while entering a new dimension.
