Confirmed: Rock Band 3 adds keyboard support

First we heard that Rock Band 3 would support a keyboard. Then we heard it was a keytar. Now, we know the truth. Rock Band 3 WILL support a new MIDI keyboard instrument that can be used in horizontal or vertical position!

A new interview and gameplay video between Harmonix and USA Today confirmed our suspicions. Sylvain Dubrofsky, senior designer for the title, spoke a bit about the new instrument, showing off an early prototype. The 25-key keyboard includes a touch strip, and is divided into different colored sections. And apparently, Queen’s head-shaking, lyric-mouthing rock anthem “Bohemian Rhapsody,” as well as the Huey Lewis and the News classic “The Power of Love” are setlist bound.

“We’re actually utilizing the full two-octave range that the keyboard controller has,” said Harmonix’s Daniel Sussman. “Everything that you are playing, whether you are playing on easy or expert, is accurate musical information. The track looks like a real keyboard track, and you are playing notes on the keyboard that if you were to step away from the game and were to play on a real piano, they would be the right notes.”

Watch the video above to hear about the new keyboard, and some of the new features of Rock Band 3.
