Despite lackluster support and sales for the PSPgo, Michael Ephraim of Sony Computer Entertainment Australia and New Zealand has suggested that the PSPgo model will serve as a major influence in future PSP systems.
“[The PSPgo] was the first device of its kind where you did not have packaged goods or pre-recorded media. I think PSPgo will blaze the trail for future iterations of the handheld. The handheld space is very crowded, not just in the games category but also with smart phones and so on. We’re happy we launched it so we can understand the market.”
Could the rumored PSP2 end up taking a digital distribution-only route like the PSPgo, perhaps more closely following the iPhone and Droid smartphones? This of course goes on top of the rumors of the PSP2 more closely resembling a souped-up DSi. We’ll just have to wait and see!
