Wired takes on Nintendo’s “no transfer” data restrictions

Wii and DS gamers have come to accept Nintendo’s current data limitations. Currently, both the Wii and DS are incapable of having user’s transfer data to alternate Wii and DS machines. Wired Magazine took issue with the dilemma, and was surprised that there’s still no solution for data transfer.

Wired faults Nintendo’s current decision to have downloadable games locked to a specific console, instead of a specific user. If a Wii owner’s console malfunctions, Nintendo will have to transfer the data themselves to a new console. Sometimes however, they aren’t able to retrieve the data, indicating a lack of foresight when creating the Wii and DSi Shop Channels.

Sure, it’s not really a new issue, as most Nintendo fans have known and accepted this since the launch of both consoles. However, it was brought to light with the recent release of Nintendo’s black Wii console. The allure of the first new color since the console’s 2006 release was enough for some current Wii owners to trade up.  Unfortunately, their precious Virtual Console and WiiWare titles had to be left behind.

Wired did note that Nintendo is “looking into” a way to let users transfer data. Hopefully, Nintendo will implement a new system to transfer these games to future hardware releases, or else my Wii 2 system menu is going to be pretty empty.

I recently had my Wii repaired by Nintendo, and I lost all of my data. I knew I would before I sent it in, but as we all know, there was no way to back game data up. I may have been able to back up channels with an SD card, but I don't own one. I would have been nice to have some more options!

even though u can transfer the channels to the sd card if u get a new wii they will not work, i have tried it.

If your licenses are transferred over to the new console (which they would be if it was sent into Nintendo for repair/replacement) it should be possible to transfer your existing channels from an SD card. I think. :P And setrodox: you can backup a lot of game data, but not all of it. An SD card is less than ten dollars. You should invest in one.
