Xbox 360 failure rate at 42% according to new survey

Contrary to Microsoft’s claims that the Red Ring of Death should be fading into obscurity thanks to better manufacturing, a new survey suggests that the Xbox 360′s failure rate is still in excess of two out of every five systems.

While the Wii and PlayStation 3 failure rates stood at approximately 1% and 8%, respectively, 42% of Xbox 360 owners reported having their console fail on them. In addition, of those 42% who experienced 360 failures, 55% (or over half) of them have had to go through the process more than once, and 39% more than twice.

These statistics come from a survey of 500,000 gamers, a large enough sample size that should minimize the margin of error. Have you had hardware failures with any of your consoles? Do these numbers reflect what you and your friends have experienced?

Good lord how does Microsoft ever hope to post a profit from their gaming division when they have problems like this?

    • Andy

My number of red rings of death = 3 times.

You disgusting pigs at microsoft should stop ripping customers off. We shouldnt have to worry constantly about this crap after paying top dollar. We did our end of the bargain paying the money the least you thieves could do is keep yours and ensure your piece of crap at least works for more than a while.

    thanks for nothing.

Yes, voice your displeasure at Microsoft.

Then go out and buy more games and keep playing your 360, that'll show them you mean business.

I got a red ring on my 14 month old 360. It was refurbished from GameStop so my roommate decided to replace it since it had been while he was playing it when it red ringed. This new one is definitely an Elite and not the entry-level one that I had. The people where he got it said that the one I had was using a 4 watt motherboard and the new one uses a 2 watt one, reducing the risk of red rings. But I swear that this will be the last 360 I buy, but I'll still buy more and more games for it. :D
