Today, Microsoft is investigating an incident in which Larry Hryb, the blogger known as Major Nelso and XBOX Live’s Director of Programming, and his XBOX Live account were the victim of a hack. I say “victim of a hack” and not “hacked”, because it’s likely he was just phished, not actually hacked. Given that that the vocabulary of the “hacker” was reduced to words like “f****t”, I’m thinking he lacks the necessary intelligence to actually hack an account. That, and we’re all aware of how easy it is to phish a Live account. My identity was stolen through XBOX Live just last year.
The account has since been restored and Director of Policy and Enforcement Stephen Toulouse is “looking into it”–but they won’t have to go too far. Joystiq has already figured out the name and location of the hacker, who not only advertised his “services” “hacking” “any” Live account, but also redirected would-be customers to his website, which is registered to Yasiel Rodriguez, of Miami. Yeah, dude is a real genius.
