New South Australian Attorney-General supports R18+ rating

Many gamers in Australia have been clamoring for a new R18+ rating. Such a rating might just open up Australia’s doors to more mature games that the country has been deprived of in the past. Manhunt 2 ban, anyone?

When Michael Atkinson stepped down as South Australia’s Attorney-General, the arguably biggest obstacle in the way of the R18+ rating was out of the way. John Rau, Atkinson’s successor, spoke roughly two week ago with Gamers4Croydon party president Chris Prior on the issue. Here’s what Prior passed along:

“He indicated to me that the lack of an R18+ for games seemed absurd, and that it was really just common sense to introduce it, considering the vast majority of adult content is already available under the MA15+ classification.”

The next meeting of attorneys-general will be in late April, at which the new R18+ rating will be on the agenda.
