Android Marketplace sees huge gaming rise

With AT&T’s iPhone exclusivity continuing on, Google’s Android operating system seems to be stepping in on its territory. Sales for Android based phones have soared, offering folks a sleek new operating system to choose from, bundled with their very own App Store. Google has noted that over 60,000 Android phones ship per day.

Data released by FADE, Forecasting and Analyzing Digital Entertainment, indicated that sales for games on Android marketplace have risen nearly 50% for January and February, compared to the previous two months. Revenue for all paid game titles reached $900,000 for January and February, over $600,000 from November and December.

For the past seven months, the game Robo Defense has remained the top downloaded title on the Android service. Other top titles among Android’s most popular are illegal emulators for NES, Super Nintendo and Game Boy. Emulators consist of a compilation of titles, reformatted for use on the mobile device. While not authorized by Nintendo, these emulators have seen sales of over 30,000.

While games are doing well, FADE acknowledges that most Android users are spending less than $0.50 on applications, compared to 6.1 cents on gaming. The group theorizes that the inability to save downloaded applications onto SD cards could be a factor. However, free applications are soaring, with over 289,000,000 downloaded to date. Wow.
