Is Mario Party 9 finally on the way?

Mario’s notorious near-annual mini-game compilation was continuously one of the most successful titles in the genre. But despite the addition of the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, Mario Party 8 felt stale, and just didn’t deliver the way fans and critics would have liked. Now, after nearly three years, is it possible Nintendo is relaunching the franchise?

Nintendo Power is teasing a new game announcement in their next issue. Curiously, the image used for the tease is that of Mario, taken straight from the cover of Mario Party 8. Is this a case of recycled artwork, or a hint for gamers with an eye for detail?

If you can remember, a few months back Charles Martinet (he’s the voice of Mario for the 2 of you that didnt’ know that) admitted via Twitter that he was recording his signature voice for a new unannounced Mario title. It would make sense that this reveal would fit a Mario Party release. Then again, we still haven’t seen a Mario Golf or Mario Tennis Wii release yet, something almost appauling considering the Wii’s motion controls.

Less than one month left before we find out in the next issue of the magazine. What would you like the surprise title to be?

    mario party 9 should have a mario galaxy 2 theme. Boards would be:
    mario faceship board
    yoshi star board
    puzzle plank board
    tall trunk board
    supermassive board
    slipsand board
    and a bowser galaxy generator board.
    8 was soooo lame, NO luck minigames allowed
    story mode co-op, wifi, boss minigames- 2 for each board.

    Fantastic suggestions. With Wii Party later this year however, I doubt we'll see a new Mario Party for a while, maybe until the Wii successor. Let's hope I'm wrong.

    I think that you should be able to be baby mario,luigi,peach and daisy,paper mario,luigi and bowser.dry bowser and pinta piranha

    hi there cool cool mario party 9 here is what i would want more space levels multi-player between the wii and dsi or ds or the new 3DS more stars and coins like up too 300 stars and 2,000 coins

    I'll only get it if they added some decent features like:
    - Online multiplayer
    - Voice chat
    - Have the awesome item system of Mario party 3, no capsules or other gimmicks
    - The "Custom minigame set" from Mario party 4 which let you choose what minigames would be playable on a board so you could disable boring minigames
    - A create your own board mode and the ability to share custom boards over wi-fi
    - Decent mini-games, perhaps the top 5 minigames out of each mario party be chosen which would be 40 minigames, plus 80 new minigames with some depth to them
    - Boards where you have to around the map, racing to the star space, no gimmick maps where you have to do something else to get a star

    Wouldn't it be great if Nintendo announced Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, and Mario Party 9 at GDC? I think it's time for a Mario come back. I mean... I wouldn't mind some new Zelda news or a new Kirby game or something, but let's not ask too much of Nintendo, 'less we be disappointed.

    It better be a new maio party game. I;ve had so many good memories with the earlier installments for the gamecube. 8 unfotunately didn't live up to my expectations but I still have undying nostalgia and hope for a new sequel!!!
