Square Enix calls Avatar’s similarities to Final Fantasy “suspicious”

Final Fantasy has become one of the longest franchises in video game history, with FF XIII easily the year’s most talked about RPG title. However, with longevity and originality, undeniably comes competition. During a recent interview, the game’s director Motomu Toriyama discussed similarities between their series and a certain blue raced billion dollar blockbuster CGI movie.

The in-game universe this time around is quite fantasy based, but also futuristic at the same time. We never really had any particular reference points for Final Fantasy XIII, in terms of places where we drew inspiration from. That said, we’re a little suspicious that the world famous Avatar movie might have take inspiration from us!

Although the concept of a sci-fi environment that mixes humans and creatures isn’t necessarily a new idea, it’s possible to see how some inspiration might have been passed along. What do you think? Is Final Fantasy XIII really the chicken or the egg in futuristic fantasy simulators, or should Toriyama be ashamed for doubting James Cameron’s originality?

  • Pocahontas, Dances With Wolves, Smurfs...what DIDN'T inspire Avatar?

thank you. jurassic park, star wars and the matrix. seemed entirely unoriginal and cliche. i was actually sick from comparing the movie. if avatar actually bit FF then it would have been way better.
  • You know its bad when people keep telling you "Don't go for the story, go for the visuals."
  • Yes, I believe in some cases that Avatar was inspired in FF but like I love the two things (movie and game) so well they kinda go together, but like I think they shouldn't be stressed though as this two things are great maybe James Cameron will be the director of Final Fantasy the movie, we will never know x)
