Sony says “do NOT use your PS3″

UPDATE: Waves of people are now reporting that their PS3 consoles are now back to normal. It appears Sony may have fixed the bug. Personally, all of my PS3 personal settings have been deleted, and I had to re-set up my audio/video preferences, as well as my background. Also, the date on my console’s calendar is yesterday. I’m curious to see what other features have been changed.

As we previously reported, there seems to be an issue with some PS3 consoles. Some are experiencing PlayStation Network connection issues, while others are just having trouble playing games. While Sony yesterday via their Twitter acknowledged that they’re fully aware of the issue, a report from Yahoo! today claims it may be pretty serious.

Sony believes the bug is related to the clock of the console. Some users noted that their calendar’s showed the date as January 1, 2000. Sony is assuring folks that they are hard at work on a solution, one they hope to have ready within 24 hours, but they have some discouraging words for those planning on finishing up Heavy Rain tonight.

Here’s what Sony had to say:

In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.”

This easily has to be one of the most inconvenient things to happen to the gaming industry, ever. Sure network errors happen all the time, but for games not to work because of a bug, for more than a day, is a pretty big deal. I’m curious to see exactly how many consoles are affected. Hopefully Sony can deliver a remedy as soon as possible.

Y!
