Sony may charge users for PSN access

Rumors have gone around for a while that Sony was looking to charge a fee for some premium subscription content on their PlayStation Network. Now, reports are that Sony may charge everyone to use the service, similar to Microsoft’s Xbox Live.  In a new interview with IGN, Sony’s VP of marketing Peter Dille spoke about the possibility of charging everyone for using the service.

It’s been our philosophy not to charge for it from launch up until now, but Kaz [Kazuo Hirai, Chairman and CEO] recently went on the record as saying that’s something we’re looking at. I can confirm that as well. That’s something that we’re actively thinking about. What’s the best way to approach that if we were to do that? You know, no announcements at this point in time, but it’s something we’re thinking about.

I guess it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if access to the PSN came at a price, considering the huge success of Xbox Live’s subscription model.  Would a fee for PSN access strengthen the quality of what’s offered, or would users head for the hills?

Personally I am not a fan of online gaming, the only thing I really use PSN for is buying addons and games from their store. If they start charging a fee for PSN, I'll just stop buying from their store. It's really that simple, for me.

I'm with you, Kevin. I use PSN infrequently, and pretty much only to buy games, like Fat Princess and Soul Reaver. I won't be a passenger on their gravy train should they decide to start charging. And I think it'd be a bad move from them simply on the basis of: you can't have something provided for free, and then start charging for it, and expect people to not get upset. I predict major backlash if they do this.
