Kamiya: Maybe more Viewtiful Joe, but no more Okami

OkamiViewtiful

In an upcoming issue of Game Informer, Platinum Games’ Hideki Kamiya took a break from speaking all things Bayonetta to discuss two titles that fans and critics adore.  Viewtiful Joe and Okami are certainly fan favorites, and while they are different from each other visually, both were created with a unique art style that made them stand out.  Unfortunately, Kamiya revealed that he doesn’t have the rights to any of the IPs he’s helped create. “They belong to the companies that publish them,” he said.

When asked by Game Informer which of the IPs he’d like to revisit, he revealed that at one point he expressed interest in sequels for both Okami and Viewtiful Joe. However, that’s not the case anymore.

Up until very recently I really felt someday I wanted to make a sequel to Okami, and there were others who wanted me to as well. But then the other day I heard the announcement that someone else would be making a [DS] sequel and now I’m just not interested in it anymore. Once someone else touches a world that you yourself created it stops being yours. There is no point in making a sequel when the world doesn’t belong to you. Viewtiful Joe is probably all I’ve got left. That story is incomplete so I’d like to finish it someday. But that would probably be the most difficult one to do [laughs].

Kamiya’s full interview is available on newstands in the latest Game Informer issue 201.
