Microsoft warns: watch out for second hand modded consoles

It appears that XBOX 360 owners/victims of Microsoft’s recent XBOX Live mass banning are already trying to drop their now-worthless consoles. A dirty trick (taking advantage of clueless consumers) but unsurprisingly nonetheless. In response to the flooding of modified 360s available now on Craigslist, a Microsoft spokesperson told IGN:

“If you purchase a modified console second-hand, the warranty is not transferable and the purchaser assumes the risk for any previous modifications. If you purchase a console that has been previously banned, you will not be able to connect to LIVE.”

In other words, if you buy a used XBOX 360 and it turns out to have been previously banned, tough sh!t. But ew, you weren’t going to buy yourself a console on icky Craigslist anyway, were you? WERE YOU? Gross dude, gross.

  • Hm I think that refund policy might be a tricky thing. Most of these second hand purchases aren't occurring somewhere you easily get a receipt from, and it seems unfair for a store like Gamespot (or even Microsoft, for that matter) to get saddled with a worthless console.

Did you friend buy a new copy of MW2 for the PS3 after he traded his XBOX 360? Just curious. I hear the servers on PSN are...well, less than adequate would be the SFW version of what a few of my friends have said!

So I'm at work and the other dude loves MW2 right. His 360 was modded and he found out he got banned. He left right away to EB Games, traded in his 360 and bought a PS3. I'd be sceptical of any system anywhere, I think most companies would exercise a refund policy if you found some sort of reason it was defective such as it being modded.
