Microsoft begins new Xbox Rewards program

XboxRewards

Microsoft is starting an Xbox Live Rewards pilot program to run over the next six months. Run by the Xbox Live Rewards Squad, the program will work to give gamers rewards by placing them within different program tiers. Microsoft has been sending out emails inviting gamers to join.  Those who are selected for the pilot program will receive 100 Microsoft Points. Within the program are three tiers, Project A, Project Y and Project X, each offering different rewards to gamers. Here are the breakdowns of each project.

Project A (AKA Project “gray”) is the lowest tier.

While I like the concept of a rewards system added to gaming purchases and online use, at this point, I would much rather see Xbox Live become FREE.

You can see that Microsoft is looking for reasons to continue to justify their paid service, as PSN closes the gap between the two platforms' features offered to users. One of the few key advantages that XBL has boasted is cross-game voice chat, and that feature is slated to come with the next PS firmware update.

These rewards are a nice way to give back (mostly) to Gold members, but it would still come out better for these players to not pay for the service and have no rewards. I'm curious to see what happens when PSN matches XBL, including its Netflix addition.
