New details on Wii 2 already leaked?

wii

Have some details on the Wii 2 already been leaked? So says Logic-Sunrise.com, citing a Nintendo of France employee (who should probably start scouring the wanted ads right abooout…now).

According to the source, the Wii 2 is said to have a Blu-Ray drive and will support 1080p for both games and movies. They even mention an option to trade in your old Wii! And all this by the third quarter of next year. Well, so the source says anyway.

While a Wii 2 still feels “too soon”, the trade-in option could help relieve buyer burn-out. If I was able to make my Wii 2 purchase (and transfer of all my old games) a little less impractical, then I’m more likely to buy it. The Blu-Ray drive doesn’t hurt either (though my PS3 one is holding up just fine).

What say you? Does it sound like there’s merit to these rumors? And if the Wii 2 is really due out next third quarter, will you be ready to make the new purchase?

It would be a little bit unprecedented, but then at the same time this would be the first time that an upgrade of this sort would make any sense at all. In the cartridge days, a couple of things were true. First, cartridges were already flexible in storage size, limited more by expense than anything else. Second, you could just slap extra processing power onto the cartridge to get a bit more out of the system if you so desired (SuperFX, anyone?)

For most of the GameCube’s life, BD was still not quite at the mainstream. Heck, BD & HD-DVD were still throwing punches! Better solution – EOL the GameCube, make the discs bigger and the system shinier, and call it Wii!

Not sure how realistic it is, because it’s a whole new world. Knowing the moves Nintendo has been pulling lately, I wouldn’t be surprised by anything…
