Nyko’s Zoom Case for DSi launches, looks as beastly as ever

Nyko Zoom Case

We all knew this day was coming – the day that the Nyko Zoom Case for the DSi started shipping out to stores. In case you missed the coverage from E3, the Zoom Case is just an ordinary, run of the mill protective case for your DSi… except that your $25 also gets you a big honkin’ lens that can be attached and detached at a moment’s notice, via what appears to be a bayonet mount. No information is given about the lens itself (materials, elements, etc) but I’ll go out on a limb and say that it’s not quite up to the standards of, say, Leica glass. I don’t really know of anybody using their DSi as a camera, and I’d guess that’s because their phones already have better quality cameras built in, but I’ll entertain the thought that it’s simply because they don’t have a gigantic lens yet.

LOS ANGELES – October 28, 2009

Leading gaming peripherals manufacturer, Nyko Technologies®, today announced that the Zoom Case, a detachable optical zoom lens and hard shell case for the Nintendo DSi™ , is now available on store shelves for $24.99. On the heels of Nintendo’s DSi update, which allows users to upload pictures directly to Facebook™, the Zoom Case will enable users to share clear shots taken from greater distances, while protecting their DSi from scuffs and scratches.

“Nyko strives to find ways we can improve upon today’s latest gaming systems,” said Chris Arbogast, Director of Marketing at Nyko Technologies. “That tradition continues in a product like the Zoom Case which improves upon one of the landmark features of the DSi, enabling gamers to take higher quality images, which is perfect for the growing suite of social networking capabilities available on the platform.”

Nyko’s Zoom Case, a protective case with an 8x zoom lens for the DSi, significantly magnifies the handheld’s external camera. The Zoom Case wraps around the DSi, protecting it from bumps and scratches while the removable 8x optical zoom lens allows for closer, clearer shots from a greater distance. The zoom lens easily locks onto the Zoom Case, and when not in use can be safely stored in its own hard case for easy travel. The case’s textured grip provides a more comfortable hold for extended gameplay sessions.

Wow, that model looks like one classy lady. On topic, why is a zoom needed for the DSi camera? I kind of see that as a novelty, not anything to be taken so seriously as to need a zoom. Ah well, people love their toys. I guess as far as protective cases go, you might as well get one with a camera zoom if its not outrageously more expensive.

The model cracks me up! I guess it’s just the thing you do when you have some new gadgets to display, but really… for an accessory like this? I also like the whole sort of self-referential premise that comes up from time to time with models flaunting cameras, the whole time truly being situated in front of, rather than behind the lens. Also, this model’s hair reminds me of those ‘Bumpits’ that they sell on TV to shoot your hair up into the sky…

As far as the case/lens… I totally agree… I know the only pictures I’ve shot with my DSi are of myself making stupid faces for the thrill of embarrassment when I go to the home screen. Additionally, this thing looks crazy impractical to carry around… Just in case the lens wasn’t unwieldy enough, the case for the lens looks to add quite a bit more thickness to it… With the whole thing assembled, it looks to be competing with my DP2 for size…

She kinda cracks me up too, the whole thing just seems a little much for just a DSi zoom camera, lol. Also, Bumpits are hilarious.
