Nintendo calls early 4″ DSi reports “speculative”

dsi

The web buzz over the upcoming 4″ Nintendo DSi has only just started and already Nintendo is looking to shut it down. Nintendo’s PR rep, when phoned for comment on the rumored jumbo DSi by Famitsu, said:

“We conducted no interviews. We believe it was an article based on conjecture.”

As AndriaSang points out, Nikkei’s “past conjecture” has in the past leaked, among other things, the news on Wii Fit Plus, Super Mario Galaxy 2, and the DSi itself.

And considering Nintendo lies about their upcoming products and services, oh I dunno, all the time I’m taking their denial with a grain of salt. The last time I gave them the benefit of a doubt, they had me actually believing that the rumored Nintendo Wii drop (despite photographic evidence) was all lies.

Then it was confirmed the following weekend.

So basically, if it comes down to believing Nikkei or Nintendo, well, in the words of an illustrious and oh so eloquent President in America’s not too distant past:

“Fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can’t get fooled again.”

Console makers lie about price drops until they actually happen because, if buyers know about it ahead of time, they’re likely to wait however many weeks until after the price drop to buy, leaving retailers with stagnant stock while they drive pins into their Iwata voodoo dolls. Heck, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were contractually obligated to deny any price drops until they hit the streets.

I can’t see a good reason for Nintendo to be lying here, though, unless this is considered “too soon” in the DSi lifecycle.

Yeah it’s obvious in the case of price drops on consoles why there would be a “deny til I die” policy, I just share your view that Nintendo does this at times when it seems pointless, like in this case. Maybe they’re concerned about consistency–if they deny everything whether its true or not, you’ll always know the official party line from Nintendo, which is “no.”

“if they deny everything whether its true or not, you’ll always know the official party line from Nintendo, which is “no.””

That would make blogging about Nintendo news easy, if a tad predictable. The “three sources” rule would mean waiting for confirmation from the Best Buy, Toys R Us and Wal-Mart weekly fliers. :P

It is what it is. Can you name an example of Nintendo responding to a rumor with a yes? It may not be impossible but it sure won’t be easy.
