The Tanooki’s Daily Recap – October 26, 2009

091026recap

Hmm, our multi-platform coverage is kind of lopsided, huh? I guess that’s what happens when you try and make the switch when everyone’s just used to covering Nintendo. It’s going to take us some time to get used to covering everything, so if you know anyone that would like to help us out, be sure to have them check out our application page – especially if they’re avid Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3/PSP gamers.

In the meantime, we’re all getting used to posting again. A virus kept us down for a week, and caused a few problems that I need to explain to those of you who don’t follow us on Twitter. The fact is, we were in the early stages of redesigning our site when the virus took us down. When it did, I managed to get a backup in place, but it was an incomplete backup with enough holes to cause problems. Luckily, we had this prototype design almost ready to go. It’s actually been scrapped as the true new design, but it will have to tide us over until the new one’s done. Many aspects you’re seeing now won’t make it over, but some of the new features will. I’m curious as to what you think of the design. Likes? Dislikes? Comment and let us know!

I’m not sure where the best place to comment is, so how about on a daily recap.

I’m a little disappointed by the new layout. All of the reading space is gone! I really liked being able to scroll down the page and read the articles as I go. Now, I can’t read anything without opening the article.

Also, I really appreciated your loyalty to Nintendo. I’m not interested in the other guys, and if I was, I could go to other websites. It’s just not the same to have multi-platform coverage on a site called “thetanooki.”

Anyway, I didn’t see any posts announcing the new look, and I haven’t seen any good places for feedback. Here’s my feedback. Take it as you will.

Thanks for the comments! Remember, this was only a backup plan until we get the new-new design in place. Would you like the option of viewing the site in the traditional blog format? It’s something I’m heavily considering.

I’ll look into better ways to divide the site into containers specific to platforms. Right now, you can click the platform you want to view news for at the top, but I’ll be honest, that’s a bit of a hassle if you’re into both Wii and DS, or PS3 and PSP, for example.

      Other comments?

Just a thought – could we set up subdomains that redirect straight to any given platform or manufacturer’s section? Would be much less of a hassle to go to nintendo.thetanooki.com than to click through to it or remember to go to http://www.thetanooki.com/category/nintendo/… I know it should be simple from a technical standpoint, but I don’t know if cost would be an issue since I don’t know what DNS hosting we’re under, etc…

Its a really good idea,. I like being able to do that at IGN, and just change the lead-in to jump from section to section as I please without having to read the sections I find unnecessary.

I like that idea. That’s sort of what Joystiq did with their coverage, except kept their main page to be multi-console but has console specific pages set up for additional stories/ articles. Maybe subdomains would allow Nintendo exclusive fans to skip the Halo articles, and so on.

Or if easier, to change the sub headings to console company, such as Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft… and not Wii, DS, PS3, PSP etc.

Yeah, I like the blog format. It is so much easier to browse.

Also, changing the categories to company-based categories rather than platform-based is a good idea.

I didn’t realize this format was temporary. If there was a post about the new format, could you link it for me? I missed it.

There isn’t a post. I usually don’t like us to use separate posts to talk about site issues – that’s usually when I make use of the Daily Recaps. However, when we were down, I provided links to our Facebook group and Twitter feed, where I explained it to those who follow us. You can find those links at the bottom of the page.

Oh yeah. I haven’t looked at that group in a long time now.
