Report: 4″ DSi to hit Japan later this year

According to Nikkei, Japan is set to get a new, larger version of the Nintendo DSi later this year.

The new DSi will be the same price, and at 4 inches, will have a screen 3/4 ” wider than the current model.  Apparently they’re making this for the “older generation”, the consumer base of such items as the jumbo remote control and large print crossword puzzles.

A release of this version elsewhere is said to still be in discussion, but I’m sure its coming. As this new DSi shows, they won’t stop til everyone and your Grandma is playing a Nintendo handheld!

    I was already pretty happy with the increase in screen size from the Lite to the DSi, but hey if they want to make it better that's fine with me
  • Actually, I think the report did kind of indicate that bigger buttons were part of the deal. Its for those old folks with poor eyesight, after all.

    Will the screen be the only thing that's bigger? I'm a grown gaijin, I have man hands, and they keep making things smaller on me!

    Remember the original Game Boy, how it had the same sized buttons as the NES? You could even swap out the d-pad and A and B buttons between the two if you wanted a different texture. I may have to see if it's possible to swap buttons between a DMG and a Classic Controller as a science experiment, if I ever get around to getting the proper security bit...

    Where was I? Ah yes, little tiny girly buttons! No, not even that, I've seen girls with bigger buttons! I for one welcome the prospect of a... DS Heavy? DS Phat? Heck, just bring back the grown-up L and R buttons that were on the original DS and I'll be satisfied!
  • I'm not sure how to feel about this… On the one hand, there have always been rumors about various incarnations of the DS getting a bigger screen, and none have come to fruition. Also, it seems unprecedented for Nintendo to release a revision that would require complete retooling of the exterior design… Not just changing the color of the plastic used or anything… This would be a change that would require some effort…

    On the other hand, I'm probably just being a bitter early adopter…
