Michael Pachter, an analyst over at Wedbush Morgan, recently sat down and gave his insight on one of Nintendo’s biggest weapons for Holiday 2009 in North America: New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
They’ll have 60 million people who are gonna look at this game! What’s the attach rate need to be for it to sell 10 million units? Not very big. It’s gonna shock you how many units that thing sells.
I can totally see that happening. On top of that, Wii Fit Plus sales seem to be brisk, and Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver seem to be kicking it over in Japan. It should be a healthy holiday for Nintendo.
On the flip side, Pachter mentioned that Nintendo’s a victim of their own success. Had Nintendo really grasped how well the Wii would have sold, they could have launched at a higher price. They might not have reached the sales levels they did in ’07, but it would still have been enough to warrant champagne popping… and then they’d be able to better control price drops and maintain a consistent level of sales through today. Instead, they’re only selling just a little less awesomely compared to last couple of years, and now we all think the sky’s falling.
