Miyamoto: Next Wii peripherals “cheaper, smaller”

As time goes on and our favorite “current gen” consoles become “last gen” consoles, the inevitable questions begin. What will the next version of the console include? What’s its future in regards to motion control? Popular Mechanics recently sat down with Shigeru Miyamoto to talk Nintendo, and among the topics, the future of the Wii motion controls and their inclusion in the next system:

“With both the Wii remote itself and Wii Motion Plus, what we’ve been able to do is introduce an interface that is both I think appealing and at the right price for a broad audience,” said Miyamoto. “And while we don’t have any concrete plans for what we’ll be doing with hardware in the future, what I can say is that, my guess is that because we found this interface to be so interesting, I think it would be likely that we would try to make that same functionality perhaps more compact and perhaps even more cost-efficient.”

Given that the Wii Motion Plus’ price has volleyed between $70-$80 and has the size of your average 2 x 4, he might be on to something there.

Oh, and another nice tidbit from the interview: when asked what he’s working on right now, he said “the next Legend of Zelda game”.  Swoon!
