Wii Fit sales almost as awesome as Grand Theft Auto sales, Wii Play holds steady lead

Wii Play

Wii Fit is holding on to the third place for total game sales during the current decade, slowly encroaching upon Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Trends suggest that Nintendo’s exercise game would overtake GTA if not for the impending release of Wii Fit Plus. Nintendo chalks this success up to the inclusion of a peripheral, which also helps to explain the sales numbers behind the top selling game for the decade – Wii Play. Wii Play’s approximately 11 million units sold (compare to approx. 8 million for Wii Fit and approx. 8.3 million for GTA) likely says more about the public’s need for a second controller than the game contained within, yet still gives Nintendo some slick bragging rights as the minigame collection seats them comfortably in that number one position.

If a better game offered a wiimote with it, then I believe that wii play’s sales would decline significantly…

Exactly… It technically counts but we all know that nobody is buying Wii Play, they’re buying a second Wiimote and thinking ‘maybe I can get $10 of enjoyment out of these games too…’

I bring my Wii to parties with friends and family all the time, a large portion of which includes the so-called “casual” crowd. You’d be surprised how many love Wii Play as one of their favorites, if not THE favorite…

Yeah, it’s definitely sort of a nice surprise once you actually play it. I feel like there’s something for everyone in there – I personally love the tanks, makes me feel like I’m playing Combat on my 2600 again… I wonder, though, how many people really buy it thinking ‘Sweet, Wii Play!’ vs ‘Well, for $10 more…’

I love me some Wii Billiards. Me and the significant other still play it pretty regularly.
