Rumor: New DS to feature Nvidia chip

A rumor has surfaced that Nvidia has won a contract to supply Nintendo with a chip to be used for the next version of their DS handheld.  It’s been reported that news outlet BSN received word that the Tegra chip, which is currently being used in Microsoft’s Zune HD, is set to power the new DS.

With already three versions on the market, it’s likely that Nintendo is looking to build upon the popular DS line of handhelds.  After all, they do sell faster than the McRib.

The new DS is said to be announced in late 2010.

That’s very interesting, though it would break their tendency to release in threes (1st gen – GB, GBP, GBC; 2nd gen – GBA, GBASP, GBM). A whole new GPU would suggest a whole new platform, really… Could this be the next big evolutionary leap rather than just an incremental upgrade to the DS? They would essentially have to include old hardware for one level of backward compatibility as has been the tradition… All seems to suggest ‘brand spankin’ new’ to me…

    Nvidia?

    This nVidia?

I’ve already been burned once (no pun intended) by them.

Backwards compatibility didn’t really help the GBC, or GBA, and the lack of it certainly didn’t hurt the GBM. If a whole new platform were to be in the works and Nintendo honestly worried about compatibility with previous games (e.g. Pokemon transfers or something), they’ll find a way to make use of the wireless transmissions rather than use a direct solution.

They’ve been testing the waters with digital distribution (DSiWare) anyway, so knowing this business, you’ll have to keep your old DS or buy GB/DS games on a new handheld VC of sorts to play old games.

I wasn’t trying to suggest that backward compatibility helps or hurts… Just that it’s become a bit of a trend. That said, the impending switch to digital distribution does mix things up a bit… But consider the DS having a whole additional slot that was (practically) useless for anything but backward compatibility… I know it also supported the RAM card and the rumble pack, but it definitely got more use as a GBA slot…

Also, I don’t have any hard evidence either way, but I remember people grumbling about the lack of backward compatibility on the GBM (although people grumbled about a lot of things with the GBM), and of course a lot of people grumbled about the lack of GBA on the DSi – although the addition of downloadable content definitely quieted down that stink. Yet I still know people who scoff at me for ditching GBA for GBM, and who scoff at me for ditching DS lite for DSi, simply on grounds of backward compatibility.

I still love the GBM though.

All I can say is I’m reminded of those “Graphics by ATi” stickers

@rfLarke, Wouldn’t surprise me to see something like that on a new DS, seeing as the Wii has the ATi logo printed on its side…
