Sony shows off their “Wii Remote” for PS3

While Nintendo’s Wii Remote has stood tall for three years, Microsoft and Sony are planning on rivaling with their motion controllers in 2010.  We’ve seen Microsoft’s Natal being heavily advertised around the blogosphere, but Sony’s motion controller hasn’t been seen anywhere but a brief appearance on the E3 stage.

At the Tokyo Game Show, Sony finally showed off what their new controller looks like.  Aside having an uncanny resemblance the Bic pen character, it looks more like a microphone than a controller.

Do you think the controller will rival the Wii Remote, or is Sony offering too little too late?

I think it’s hilarious how much people badtalked the Wii when it first showed its controller and now all Nintendo’s competitors are rushing to match its success. There’s a reason why Nintendo has been so successful with the Wii and the controller is only part of it. Good marketing, good promotions, getting the word out in a grassroots style. Like this online promotion I found for a free Wii, check the link for info. Promotions like this is how the Wii keeps on top of the competition, just making an imitation controller isn’t enough.

The problem with add-ons is that they’re add-ons. You can’t guarantee that every person who owns the console will also own the add-on. At the end of the day, Sony and Microsoft will have rather small libraries of gimmick games written for these add-ons rather than making motion-sensing and pointing integral parts of just about all games for the system.

It got to the point where Sony started including the DualShock as the pack-in controller for the original PlayStation, but even then I can count on my hands the number of games released for the system that required a DualShock to play. And rumble is about the most successful add-on I can think of.
