VC won’t be getting Goldeneye 007 anytime soon

Those who held onto that shred of hope that Nintendo and Microsoft would agree to release Goldeneye 007 onto their consoles can take that dream and bury it six feet under.  After negotiations went nowhere, Rare (the developer of the N64 title who were later acquired by Microsoft) pointed the finger at Nintendo for letting a re-release die.

In a recent statement, Rare finally addressed why a Virtual Console or XBLA re-release of Goldeneye 007 is most likely not in the cards:

“That was some time ago, my friend. Fate was against us that day. Destiny conspired to raise the hurdles even as we attempted to clear them, resulting in unpleasant groinal injury. I suspect we’re long past the stage where an agreement was on the cards, but you never know. Stranger things have happened… somewhere… probably.”

I guess if you have the desire for some proximity mines in the Facility, you’ll have to dust off the old 64.

That train wreck of abused metaphors works best when repeated in a Shatneresque voice.

I hope the PR drone who wrote that mess doesn’t write dialog for their games.

I would wager that the “hurdles raised” were mostly based on Rare/Microsoft charging $15 for N64 games on the Xbox 360 while Nintendo tends to charge $10 for similar games on the Wii. Microsoft isn’t interested in marking down their XBLA content (hasn’t it been shown recently that they’re actually raising prices as time goes on?) while I doubt that Nintendo would be willing to add a “Rareware Tax” that would be beyond the pale for even Square-Enix.

So, yeah… Banjo’s fun and all, but it’s not worth 50% more than Ocarina*, and neither is Goldeneye. Thus negotiations broke down, complete with finger-pointing.

*(Especially not bound by DRM to a piece of hardware that might RRoD at any given moment and may not be forwards-compatible with whatever is next, but we won’t go there.)

I’m guess that the “hurdles” may also be in the way the re-release would be handled. While Nintendo would want a straight up re-release, Microsoft would want it to be handled like all XBox Live re-releases. Updated for HD TVs and XBox Live Multiplayer.

But the 360 is getting Perfect Dark, so even if it did get Goldeneye at any point, no one should care any more.

So many memories and hopes crushed. Of all the games I’ve obtained, this is one I was looking forward to more than others. I guarantee you people would not mind paying an extra 5 bucks for this. With SE trying to make the most, they’ve got to release something people would pay an extra 5 bucks for, and I don’t see that happening.

It’s just that everyone up there is a bunch of ****s. They can stuff themselves because this and Banjo are two games users want.

I don’t mind paying extra at all, I actually saw in store for twice the price of a virtual console nintendo 64 game.
I do wanted to play this game, but recently I got my hands on a N64 and the game Perfect Dark which is pretty awesome, and I think the N64 controller would always fit these games better than any other console.
