Konami has officially announced and released screenshots of their debut DSiWare title, a puzzle-platformer named Reflection which relies on a concept reminiscent of WayForward’s DSiWare debut Mighty Flip Champs!

The premise is such – In the process of fetching a magic mirror, our protagonist Kirra shatters said mirror and reality as she knows it simultaneously fragments. Players control Kirra on the top screen, and her shadow on the bottom, exploring a variety of levels in order to collect mirror pieces and repair reality. Questionable graphics notwithstanding, Reflection sounds like a promising addition to the two-realities-on-two-screens genre.

KONAMI ANNOUNCES REFLECTION FOR NINTENDO DSiWare

First Ever Konami Nintendo DSi Title To Deliver Mind-Bending
Puzzle Platformer Experience

El Segundo, Calif. – June XX, 2009 – Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. today announced their first title for the Nintendo DSi™, Reflection, developed by Intrinsic Games, LLC, available on Nintendo DSiWare™ for download. Combining a true 2D platformer with puzzle elements, the challenging and addictive title allows players the control a character and her mirror image through two platforming levels simultaneously.

In Reflection, players take on the role of Kirra, an adventurous girl who is tasked with retrieving a magical mirror. But upon accidentally breaking the mirror, she shatters reality, splitting herself and the world into two parts. Players will be challenged as they explore various locations including forests and temples, in order to collect the mirror shards and piece together a shattered reality.

“We wanted to come out of the gate with a quality title for our first Nintendo DSi release and Reflection has definitely set the bar high with a great storyline and gameplay features that any player would find compelling,” said Anthony Borquez, Vice President of Online and Mobile at Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. “Nintendo DSi is the optimal device to host a 2D Platformer title and as a downloadable puzzle platformer, Reflection will provide gamers with an experience that can’t be missed.”

Using the dual screen functionality on Nintendo DSi, Reflection will challenge gamers as they focus on playing both screens while navigating through the game, playing as both Kirra and her shadow. Players must control both a normal character and an upside-down mirror image simultaneously with the same set of controls, all while solving puzzles that involve manipulating both characters to progress. As the game alternates between these two sub-mechanics, gamers will have to learn to utilize both characters in order to prevail.

Reflection was the recipient of the Independent Games Festival Mobile’s inaugural Next Great Mobile Game award at the 2009 Game Developer’s Conference. It was developed as part of the University of Southern California’s joint, year-long Final Games Projects course. The USC GamePipe Laboratory Director, Michael Zyda, indicated that this was the first game to go directly from student development in class to sale in his laboratory.

“Developing Reflection has been an incredible experience for everyone involved,” noted Hersh Choksi, the game’s producer, “we are excited to be working with Konami to bring this project to the Nintendo DSi Store”

Reflection is scheduled to be released in XX 2009 for Nintendo DSiWare.
