Speaking to CNBC, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed that within the last three years, Nintendo had developed and completed a brand new handheld platform to succeed or co-exist with the Nintendo DS. After dumping all that money into R&D, it was then determined that it was not in the company’s best interest to release it, and the project was shelved indefinitely.

“In the history of Nintendo, there are several such examples. But when we are launching new hardware, the most important is thing is to sustain the momentum. If introducing new hardware won’t do anything to do that, well…”

Could this have been the rumored Game Boy successor, dubbed by fans as the “Game Boy Evolution?” I guess it’s now going the way of Project Atlantis. Looks like Nintendogs and Mario Kart DS are doing for the Nintendo DS what Pokemon did for the original Game Boy. Have a happy 5th birthday, DS.
