E3 2009: Super Mario Galaxy 2 to reuse and recycle (but not reduce!)

As it turns out, Super Mario Galaxy 2 didn’t quite start out as new and fresh as it currently looks to become. There were ideas left out of the original that the team wanted to use, so Shigeru Miyamoto and his team began working around those. What they ended up doing, however, was creating a game that contains at least 90% new material, including new stages, the use of Yoshi, and new items such as the planet drill seen in the trailer.

The other 5 or 10% of the game? It’ll be planets and galaxies from the original game, but “remixed” with items moved around and new objectives. Nintendo’s idea of going green, I guess. Overall, though, the game should be just as large or larger than the original in terms of length and content. Despite the resource-friendly notion of reusing old material, the game will still enjoy a three-year cycle (since we’re getting New Super Mario Bros. Wii this year, anyway) and we’ll be able to get our hands on it in 2010. Wahoo!
