E3 2009: Miyamoto’s take on achievements

During Shigeru Miyamoto’s roundtable discussion yesterday, the game designer provided his opinion on the achievement feature found on Microsoft’s XBox 360. Although Wii Sports Resort utilizes a “Stamp” system similar to the 360′s achievements, Miyamoto stated that he is not a fan of the XBox’s point-based incentives.

I’m not a big fan of using the carrots to motivate people to play. I want people to play because they enjoy playing and want to play more.

Miyamoto went on to say that while we shouldn’t expect to see full-blown achievements in upcoming Wii titles, the stamps found in Wii Sports Resort provide new challenges for players to experience. Having experienced games with both  good and bad achievement design, I believe that any achievement-based system should do just that.
