Majora’s Mask coming to Japanese Virtual Console

Japan is getting another N64 Virtual Console game, and it’s a big one. The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask will be released on the Japanese Virtual Console service next month. Majora’s Mask was the first Zelda game to fall into the “Hey, this isn’t Ocarina of Time!” trap laid by so many gamers who didn’t, and still don’t, know what they want. Still, Majora’s Mask is widely considered to be one of the best Zelda games, and one of the best games ever made, due largely in part to its eerily depressing atmosphere and focus on the daily lives of its NPCs.

One thing to note is that Majora’s Mask required the N64 Expansion Pak to run. Its inclusion on the Virtual Console must mean that this one particular emulation hurdle has been jumped. It also opens the door for other Expansion Pak-only N64 games, such as Donkey Kong 64.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask launches in April in Japan, for the “premium” price of 1200 points. (Hey, Nintendo of Japan. If you attach the “premium” price to every single N64 game, it stops being the “premium” price and becomes the regular price. Stop it.)
