DSi getting Virtual Handheld service? Maybe

Some people who attended the special Club Nintendo DSi events (or perhaps just one whose story was spread around) are reporting that they were told by Nintendo representatives that Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games would be appearing in the DSi Shop. This would essentially be the beginnings of a Virtual Handheld service, similar to the Wii’s Virtual Console. Reportedly, only first party Nintendo games will be available, at least in the beginning.

However, when asked for confirmation, Nintendo simply gave their “Nintendo does not comment on rumours and speculation blah-de-blah-blah” stock answer that they always give in response to any question about anything that hasn’t been officially announced, real or not. If they were sharing this information freely at the DSi events, would they be refusing to comment now? Maybe there has been a misunderstanding between Nintendo and its representatives attending the event. Maybe there is no Virtual Handheld (not the official name) service planned at all, and someone was mistaken. Or maybe it’s true, but the representatives let the cat out of the bag before Nintendo was ready to announce it officially. Only time will tell.

It’ll start just with Nintendo-published titles for Nintendo-made handhelds, but they’ll add more publishers and more platforms, until they’ve diluted things enough to the point that we end up with weekly updates that consist of a single game.com game.

At any rate, if they do go this way, I doubt it’d stop at just handhelds. After all, if you can emulate a Game Boy Advance, there’s a pretty good chance you could handle emulating an SNES, or at least a Genesis (the Nomad was a handheld, right?), and we’ve already seen N64 titles ported fairly well to the DS. I doubt it would be long before the system resembles what Sony has for the PS3 and PSP, where you can download a PSX game and play it on either system.

    that would be pretty cool.
