IGN’s Matt Casamassina discovered something a bit surprising about MadWorld, Platinum Games’ upcoming Wii action game. The game runs at 480i, not 480p. He noticed this when capturing videos of the game.

You must still buy this game, but this omission raises an interesting point. Usually, lack of 480p support can be credited to developer laziness. No way such a claim can be leveled at Platinum Games or MadWorld. This is a AAA developer which constantly pushes the artistic limits and MadWorld is the latest proof of that. I’m wondering, then, if the studio simply wasn’t aware that 480p is “kind of a big deal” for a chunk of Wii owners.

I don’t think it’s really that much of a big deal. The difference between 480p and 480i is barely noticible. People don’t buy Wiis because they’re graphics whores. Most people probably wouldn’t notice without being told. (Casamassina explicitly states that even he didn’t realize it while he was actually playing the game, just when his video capture tools told him it was running at 480i.) MadWorld is still due out early next month. (You’ll still be buying it, right?)
