DSi originally stood for Dual Slots… i…

Well, not really, but the original design for the DSi did include two separate game slots. One for DS game cards and another one for, well, DS game cards. That’s right, the original plan was to include two slots for DS games. The idea came from fan requests, but it ended up making the system too bulky so the feature was dropped. According to development engineer Masato Kuwahara:

The response [from the producers from Nintendo's Entertainment Analysis and Development Division] wasn’t that great, and, to tell the truth, we’d sort of been expecting that. According to the determined specifications, however, there was nothing we could do to stop it from turning out like that. We unveiled it to them, all the while doubting that it was going to be all right.

When I buy any kind of gadget, I always wonder how much each of the features included s costing me and how much the gadget would cost if I could opt not to have them. How much would I have ended up paying for an extra DS card slot? Probably more than the tiny plastic 3-card cases I use cost.

I fail to see the advantages of a second slot, really.

The only possible advantage I could think of is if you’re in the middle of playing two games and don’t want to carry a loose extra game with you? Bit of a stretch tho….
