…and they’re in! December’s NPD data for US sales as well as the 2008 totals are listed after the break for your amazement. Despite downturns in the economy, it looks like people were still snatching up video games throughout the holiday season. Industry sales for the month jumped 9% over last year to a record $5.29 billion. Over 2 million Wii consoles were sold in the month of December, outpaced only by the 3 million-plus DS Lite consoles sold. Of course, software played a huge role in the success as well.
Wii Play was the big one in December and in 2008 overall, selling 1.46 during the final month of the year and a whopping 5.28 units for the year. Actually, Wii Play, Mario Kart Wii, Wii Fit, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl swept 2008′s top four sales records for Nintendo, and you can bet that Wii Sports would have easily eclipsed all of them had it been counted separately.
You can check out all the numbers after the break. Here’s hoping for a decent 2009!
