The first Wii Shop update of 2009 is a small one, but any week with Kirby is a good week.

Sandy Beach (Konami, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone—Comic Mischief, 500 Wii Points): I once saw a commercial for some random service on TV, and it started with a woman saying, “Hello, I’m Sandra Beach.” I thought, “So do her friends call her Sandy Beach? Because they should.” This game is not about her. In this game, you build sandcastles and defend them against giant enemy crabs in Crab Battle mode. I guess that would make it a tower defense game.

Kirby’s Dream Land 3 (Super NES™, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points): Kirby’s friends from Kirby’s Dream Land 2 make a comeback, with some new additions. It’s classic Kirby gameplay, complete with his signature copy ability. Plus, you can ride a hamster, so that’s great too.
