Wiinoma Channel threatens Japanese TV broadcasters

The on-demand video service coming this spring to Japanese Wii consoles has been dubbed the Wiinoma Channel. While the new channel will initially be offering content produced by Nintendo, Dentsu, and partnered advertisers, TV stations across Japan are beginning to worry about the additional competition from the Wii userbase. An executive at the largest broadcaster in Japan, Fuji Television, said that if Iwata’s goal of making the Wii the centerpiece of the living room became reality, it would be “the stuff of television producers’ nightmares.”

Of course, we non-Japanese Wii owners should hope the channel succeeds. Why? So there’s a greater possibility that WE get to watch on-demand video on our Wii systems. Doesn’t Nintendo have good relations with Comcast or something? I seem to recall a Comcast Triple Play / Mario Kart Wii commercial that aired constantly a few months ago…
