Nintendo has partnered with Dentsu, the largest ad agency in Japan, to bring on-demand videos to the Wii. Starting next year, Wii owners in Japan will be able to view original content (some free, some not) via an upcoming service. By original content, they mean stuff other than your existing TV shows and movies, but who knows – maybe cartoons like Pokémon: Diamond And Pearl and Kirby: Right Back At Ya! could be exempt from that rule?
As of right now, the service IS planned to go international at some undetermined point in the future, but don’t hold your breath just yet. You know how these things often go down, especially when we’re already three years into a console’s life.
