Dragon Quest X announced, IX dated for Japan

Just minutes ago at a sneaky ninja-esque Dragon Quest event in Japan, Square-Enix dropped a bombshell. That bombshell is the fact that Dragon Quest IX will launch in Japan on March 28th for 5,980 yen.

Oh, and they also announced some new Wii game. Dragon Quest X, I think.

Yes, that’s right. Dragon Quest X will be a Wii exclusive. Details are scarce (or non-existent) right now, but we’ll be sure to keep an ear to the ground for you. Commence excitement.

This is pretty much the biggest exclusive a console can have in Japan.

What the…? No way in hell I would pay $65 for a DS game! I don’t even pay that much for console games!

Seriously, I get bent out of shape when I see DS games for much more than $30. I’d hope the price comes down before coming out over here.

Games are just more expensive in Japan. That doesn’t reflect the North American price. Though it’s a Square-Enix game so it’ll probably be more expensive than other DS games anyway.

What is especially exciting about this announcement is what it means in terms of the industry. This announcement is going to turn a lot of heads, and it means that the Wii is going to be devoured by hardcore DQ fans.

Therefore, I think we can expect to see a lot more hardcore J-RPG’s for the Wii, because developers and publishers alike now have a guaranteed audience for their games. It opens doors for other hardcore titles as well, but I think we’ll see a very significant flood of J-RPG’s first.
