After a few weeks in the making, I am proud to finally bring you our first video review!

Since this is our first video review, please give us some feedback on what you like, and more importantly, what you think can be improved. And who knows, maybe we’ll whip up a few more video reviews before the holiday season is over.

Play On Wii games will be prettier, too

Published by Rhody
Tags: Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, Play On Wii

First it was new controls, then it was tweaked gameplay, and now we learn that games released under the Play On Wii label (at least Donkey Kong Jungle Beat) will feature graphical improvements as well.

Dengeki has published some new screens of the Wii port of Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, and they’re nicer-looking than the original version. Textures and polygon counts have been changed and upgraded to take advantage of the Wii hardware. Fur appears furrier, scales scalier, snow snowier and bananas banana-ier.

Hannah’s Mario Galaxy cake is out of this world!

Published by Christian
Tags: Birthday, Cakes, Super Mario Galaxy

There have been some amazing, edible creations that we’ve posted on this site, but this one takes the cake. Hannah couldn’t make up her mind as to the cake she wanted for her fourth birthday, so her parents played through Super Mario Galaxy with her to make the Galaxy cake all the more convincing. Several concept designs later, this beauty was ready to be cut up and eaten.

And just when you thought the cake looked complex enough, the masterpiece you see before you is loaded with Rice Krispes Treats, electrical wiring, motors, mp3 players, a heavy wooden frame, fiber optic lights, you name it… all for the most magical undertaking I’ve seen for anything intended to be gobbled up. I think I might just cry… both at the sheer beauty of the video footage after the break, and knowing where the remains of the cake now rest…

I’m pretty sure Hannah had a better fourth birthday cake than all of us. Read on for that video as well as some additional photos. NOW.

Excite Truck developers working on super top secret game for Nintendo

Published by Rhody
Tags: Excite Truck, Monster Games

Monster Games, developers of Wii launch game Excite Truck, have been hard at work for the past two years on a game for Nintendo. Apparently this game is so secret, employees have to darken their monitors whenever the bottled water delivery person shows up at the office. Wow. Would they be so secretive if this game was simply Excite Truck 2?

It’s worth noting that Monster Games hasn’t produced a single non-racing game since it’s creation, so it’s probably a pretty safe bet that this mysterious new game is a racing game. Are you on the edge of your seat yet?

Capcom discusses Wii versions of Bionic Commando Rearmed and Street Fighter

Published by Rhody

Capcom VP of Strategic Planning and Business Development Christian Svensson took a few questions regarding Bionic Commando and Street Fighter on Capcom’s forums recently. When one user stated that Street Fighter II HD Remix would be possible as a WiiWare game, Svensson had this to say:

It couldn’t ever be Wiiware, even at 480p. File size is just too large given the storage restrictions for Wiiware. Theoretically it could be disc based but there are no plans at the moment. We’ll see how it does on its current platforms and then maybe we’ll see.

In the meantime, there are three different versions of Street Fighter II on the Virtual Console for Wii-owning Street Fighter fans. You can even download the whole soundtrack for free (and completely legally, of course) from OCRemix.org.

It hasn’t been easy (not saying that it has been particularly difficult either), but the Wii Fit Challenge has come to a close. Last week two of the competitors were locked atop the leader board, with yours truly  a little ways behind. Click over to see who came out on top as well as well as catch some reflections from the Fitters themselves. PS All official final weights were taken prior to Thanksgiving dinner.

Over The Top Games announces Icarian: Kindred Spirits

Published by Rhody
Tags: Icarian: Kindred Spirits, Over The Top Games

As the headline says, Over the Top Games has announced a new game called Icarian: Kindred Spirits. The game follows the adventures of Nyx, a winged girl, who is searching for her friend Icarus. Nyx will enlist the help of the Greek Gods to gain new abilities, like modifying her surroundings or controlling the wind.

It sounds like the Gods powers will be controlled with the Wii Remote pointer, so Nyx will likely be controlled with the nunchuck. Lots of people are comparing this game to Kid Icarus, but perhaps it’s more like Lost Winds.

No release date has been announced yet. Check out the official site for screenshots and other goodies.

Two new Virtual Console games rated by ESRB

Published by Rhody
Tags: KOEI, Nobunaga's Ambition, Uncharted Waters: New Horizons

At least, it’s a pretty safe bet they’re Virtual Console games, anyway. Wii remakes of these games would be surprising.

Game number 1 is Nobunaga’s Ambition. Nobunaga’s Ambition is a strategy game where the player must attempt to conquer Japan to unify it, much like Oda Nobunaga attempted to do in the real world over 400 years ago. This game was released on about as many platforms as Pac-Man, so it’s unknown exactly which version will be hitting the Virtual Console.

Game number 2 is Uncharted Waters: New Horizons. This one is a simulation/role playing game about managing a fleet of ships and doing the different things that sailors are prone to do, such as trading, treasure hunting, or even some good old-fashioned piracy. New Horizons was released on both the SNES and Genesis in 1994.

Both games were developed by KOEI and are kind of obscure, but keep an eye out for them anyway.

Rock and Roll pun suddenly makes sense with Mega Man 9 rock remix

Published by Rhody
Tags: Mega Man, Mega Man 9, Remix, Rock and Roll

Mega Man music has been a constant source of inspiration for video game remixers. Taking a look at the sheer number of Mega Man remixes on OCRemix is proof enough of that. It was only a matter of time before someone decided to rock out with Mega Man 9. One YouTube user has taken it upon himself to create a medly that covers pretty much all of the Mega Man 9 soundtrack, and covers it well.

Keep in mind that this video does contain spoilers. Of course, it’s a Mega Man game so it’s not like the story has any surprising twists, but hey, there are people out there who actually care.

Introducing…The Tanooki Forums! (again)

Published by Christian

Our daily traffic is just as good as ever, and maybe even better on our forums. Unfortunately, usage (sign-ups and discussion posts) doesn’t seem to reflect the phenomenal visitation numbers. Why?

It’s because the few people who are using it can’t exactly carry out a conversation with themselves! They need your participation, too! Go on, you know you’ve checked out our forums. It’s time to take action, sign up, and get to know your fellow Tanooki readers! Besides, I’m going to need a path of communication if I want all of your input on some of the big changes planned for the next three months, and then the next six months…
