Datel: No plans to update Freeloader anytime soon

080621freeloader.jpgWith the news that Freeloader has indeed been blocked by the Wii’s recent 3.3 firmware upgrade, I’m sure our PAL readers have been wondering what will happen next. Nintendo was apparently aware of the issue and went ahead with the update because security threats still existed. Datel has, in the meantime, issued a statement.

Please note, due to circumstances beyond our control Wii Freeloader is not compatible with latest version Wii firmware 3.3 and higher, just released (released as an online update 17/06/2008).

You can continue to use Wii Freeloader perfectly with any Wii console running firmware 3.2 and below. If you upgrade to Wii firmware 3.3 or higher this WILL disable the Freeloader function and it will stop working for all future use on all import games.

Datel has no current plans to release a Freeloader compatible with the Wii’s upgraded firmware, so you may have to do without early importing for the time being. Good thing those worldwide release dates are getting closer together, huh?

Also, I should point out there is a new version of Twilight Hack already for anyone that wishes to use that region free program.

What they aren't saying is that the reason their Freeloader doesn't work is because Nintendo fixed a bug in the way the Wii verifies that game discs are signed that allows one to trick the Wii into thinking a disc is properly signed. Freeloader was exploiting this bug to sign it's code.

It isn't that they have no plans, it is probably because they simply CAN'T update the Freeloader. If I had bought one I'd be incredibly angry...I mean, the only reason their product worked was because it exploited a bug in the Wii's system menu. One that, had they been paying attention to homebrewers (and obviously they have if they knew about it...heck, they probably used the freely available tools that can do it easy as pie for you) was easily fixable by Nintendo.

It isn't a good policy to release a product like that. Anyway, that means that the only option for people is homebrew, as there is a program called GeckoOS that allows you to boot Wii discs from other regions. :)
