If Oprah endorses Wii Fit, it’ll sell 50 million

Published by Christian

What? Wii Fit as the best selling video game in history? Wedbush Morgan’s Michael Pachter thinks it has the potential. We all know that Nintendo’s targeting a different, broader market with the Wii-Bo, and Pachter predicts that this could be the biggest thing in recent consumer electronics history if Oprah were to endorse it.

Women who watch Oprah are… if they hear about this on Oprah, they’re buying it. And if Oprah says, ‘Hey I lost 5 pounds in a week with the Wii Fit,’ they’re gonna sell 50 million units of it. And they know it.

Now, if only Nintendo could produce that many of anything within a year or two, we’d all be happy.

Konami gets in battle of the bands with Rock Revolution

Published by Christian

080518rrev.jpg

While Guitar Freaks came first, Konami’s long been out of the spotlight since Guitar Hero came out. Not to worry, though, as Konami wants to make sure you’ll have the chance to buy a third video game drum set by the end of the year.

Rock Revolution won’t have you singing into any microphones (since we all know you can’t, anyway), but you’ll be jamming to at least 40 songs - plus downloadable ones for the consoles that support it. The Wii version will allow the option of “air guitar” playing using the Wii Remote, while you’ll be able to put those homemade guitar picks on the DS version.

You can check out some screens plus the press release after the break.

Nintendo has Nnooo idea for Pokemon MMO

Published by Christian

080517poppoke.jpg

…At least, that’s what we’d assume is the case, seeing as Australian WiiWare developer Nnooo has pitched the concept. Those of you who have been busy doing background checks on these new developers may have spotted the following listing on Nnooo’s licensing page:

We have a concept for a cool Pokemon MMORPG.

Man, I wish I could pitch every cool idea I had to Nintendo. Nnooo may only have Pop on its list of accomplishments, but I’m sure the folks at Game Freak know it doesn’t take a library of a dozen games to prove your talent. Regardless of the outcome of this pitch, what would you like to see in an MMO Pokemon game?

More screens for Sonic Unleashed…unleashed!

Published by Christian

080517sunl.jpg

*Sigh*… that’s not going to get old. Sega has released seven new screenshots of Sonic Unleashed, and they were supposedly from the Wii and PS2 versions of the game, and not the uber-definition 360 and PS3 versions. But wait… these images are massively large? Yep, turns out these are also of the high-def variant.

They look pretty good, though, and the overall game should pretty much be the same except for maybe less polygons and compressed textures on the Wii version, and obviously lower resolution. Maybe you can just resize the images to a width of about 640 pixels, and then blow them up again. Yep, looks about right.

New Castlevania officially confirmed; new screens!

Published by Christian

080517ecclesia.jpg

Order of Ecclesia has officially been announced by Konami for the DS. The game introduces a new Glyph attack system allowing for over 100 attack combinations, new outdoor locations to take the fight outside the Dracula’s castle, weapon and item trading over the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, and multiple endings to provide replay value like never before.

Meh. Sound okay, right? ;)

You can check out the announcement from Konami, and several new images after the break.

History’s infamous dictator not allowed online

Published by Pete

nohitler.jpg

As I’m sure many people have found out (especially those actually named Hitler), if you try and take a Mii named Hitler online, you will promptly be rejected and politely asked to adjust the name of your character. Sure it can look like Hitler, just don’t call him that.

I definitely took my Adolf Mii online with no problems a few days after the American launch, so unless things have changed that name should be safe. Why does it not surprise me that something that is basically harmless has been blocked on Nintendo’s network?

DS expands color line up with Metallic Rose

Published by Pete

metallic-rose.jpg

Don’t be fooled by Nintendo’s clever naming, the color is still pink. Metallic rose is simply a plea bargain for all of those poor 4th grade boys who’s mothers could only find one color of DS, and have now thrown them to the proverbial dogs they used to call friends. I can see little Jimmy pleading “It’s metallic rose! It’s metallic rose!” over the pulsing chants of his classmates poking fun at his lightly tinted handheld.

Anyway, for all those out there who are looking at the color as something they like and not a way to destroy a child’s life. Good news. It’s back, and has been separated from it’s Nintendogs tie in. A commercial campaign will kick off the festivities with some celebrity support from America Ferrera, Liv Tyler, and Carrie Underwood. Press release from Nintendo after the break.

The Brawl Files: Chousouju Mecha MG and Shin Onigashima

Published by Drew

080517brawlfiles.jpg

By now, a sizable chunk of Wii owners are whiling away their hours playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl, either by beating the tar our of various assortments of Nintendo mascots or by relishing in the sheer amount of nostalgia the game packs in. However, as American players and casual Nintendo fans may have noticed, not all the references to days of Nintendo’s past are necessarily familiar. There’s an unfamiliar song here, a strange trophy there, or some sticker that makes you wonder what exactly Nintendo may have been thinking.

I figured it might make for an interesting series of columns here if I looked into what some of these games were and why they ended up being represented in Brawl in their respective manners. For me, the first tip-off that even a self-proclaimed Nintendo buff such as myself might not recognize all the throwbacks to bygone games came when the Smash Bros. Dojo posted the list of all songs available in the game. Among the list of track titles were “Marionation Gear,” which plays on Samus’s Norfair stage and comes from the game Chosoju Mecha MG, and “Shin Onigashima,” which plays on the Ice Climbers’ stage and comes from a game of the same name.

…Never heard of them. If you’re in the same boat as me, then keep on reading.

Brawl speeds past 3 million mark in the United States

Published by Christian

080516brawlsonic.jpg

Nintendo has confirmed that, based on figures from the NPD Group, Super Smash Bros. Brawl has sold over 3 million copies in the United States alone. Coupled with the fact that Brawl has already outsold both of its Smashing predecessors in Japan, it looks like Super Smash Bros. Brawl is on pace to outsell the lifetime figures for Melee within only a few months. Remember that Melee is the GameCube’s best-selling game of all-time, selling over 7 million copies worldwide.

Hopefully the game’s release in Europe and Australia later next month will help speed up the process. You can read Nintendo’s full response to the NPD Group’s report on last month’s sales after the break.

Another Kodak moment for Nintendo at E3

Published by Christian

080516reggiee3.jpg

Nintendo has announced that they will return to the Kodak Theater for their E3 press conference this year. Last year, the event took place at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium and featured the unveiling of Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii. The last time they decided it was worth renting out the Kodak Theater, Nintendo showed off their games for the Wii for the first time, four months before the system launched in North America.

Of course, they could simply be returning to Kodak because the show is moving back to the Los Angeles area. E3 was held in Santa Monica last year.
