Wii Fit forces American ways on the world (or just Canada)

Published by Christian at 11:36 pm

080523wiibbusa.jpgWii Fit is officially available in North America… and apparently, that includes Canada. How do we know? Because some Canadians have found out that Wii Fit doesn’t let them use a measurement system they’re familiar with!

The English option in Wii Fit only allows for Imperial measurements of height and weight. Feet, inches, and pounds. According to Nintendo’s support forums, if any Canadians wish to use metric units in the game, the console needs to be switched to either Spanish or French settings.

I don’t recall hearing about any similar problems with the Australian or UK releases, so it’s interesting that optional metric measurements were left out in only this version. Or maybe they American localization team just has a little too much pride.

Being a Canadian myself, I actually don’t think it’s going to be a problem. Everyone here knows their weight in pounds better than they do in kilograms, and I’ve never heard anyone call themselves, say 200cm..

The issue is just that we can’t change it, and it’s basically being force fed American culture. I think Canada is slowly moving towards the metric system, gas is in liters, milk is in liters, speed is measured in km/h, and any math we do in school is using metric values. But there are a couple things that we do the American way.

I agree with you fully, Michael. I’m a Canadian and I measure everything in pounds and the only place I see my height in centimeters is on my driver’s license (which looks rather funny).

It does tick me off that the option isn’t provided though, I know that I wouldn’t use it but it’s sad that they couldn’t at least put it in there. It’s such a small thing that you think they could have done something about it.

It reminds me of that change game in Brain Age 2 where you are given $1 bills instead of loonies. Come on Nintendo, that is just being lazy!

    HAH! Take that, Canada!

    Lol jk, that’s pretty funny.

I think you’re probably making too much of it…more likely, someone just wasn’t thinking about it. Also, if it were me, I’d just look up an online Kilogram to pounds convertor right quick and be done with it.

On another note, Wii Fit is doing well for me so far….it’s actually given me a pretty good work out. I was skeptical at first back when they announced it, but now having it in my hands, it works pretty well. Even if I don’t lose any weight, it should help to make me a more fit person.

This is all a master plan to take over Canada. The middle east, America tried giving democracy through the barrel of a gun and its not worked at all, so with canada they are trying to be sneaky, slowly changing things until one day your waving Mini american flags.

Sure it might start with removing the metric system but soon just you wait and see………well either they or i’m blowing this out of proportion.

Just because your paranoid doesn’t mean they’re not after you.
