Final Fantasy XIII coming to Wii? Crystal Tools makes it a possibility

Taku Murata, general manager of Square-Enix’s research and development division, speaking at a GDC session, discussed the state of it’s White Engine, their company wide cross-platform game engine. Actually, the engine is now known as Crystal Tools, and is now revealed to be designed with the Xbox 360 and PC in mind.

So what does all this have to do with us Nintendo fans? Murata also confirmed that a Wii build of the engine is in the early stages of development. This basically means that Square-Enix is planning ahead in terms of any content being developed with its newly christened engine. As of this writing, two games come to mind: Final Fantasy XIII itself and Final Fantasy versus XIII. Excited yet?

As awesome as that would be, didn’t the president of Square recently say something along the lines of the Wii not being suitable for any of their main franchises due to the nature of it’s demographic?

I remember because it kinda pissed me off when I read it, me being a loyal Nintendo supporter and having played every Final Fantasy from III to XII (except XI, boo.)

Things change. Maybe it’s just a precautionary step so that they won’t get caught with their thumb up their butt.

The success of the Wii has changed a lot. Don’t believe all of those stats that say third party’s products sell terrible on the Wii. Stats lie. Guitar Hero III and Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition are proof enough of that. RE4 Wii Edition is a port of a hardcore game, and it sold very well on the Wii.

The Wii has a hardcore audience, it’s just getting neglected hardcore right now, lol. Hopefully this is the way Square-Enix sees it as well, and we may yet see a main series Final Fantasy return to its Nintendo roots.
