Confirmed: No voice chat or downloadable content for Brawl

There have been plenty of rumors floating around the internet surrounding Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but none of them have been quite as interesting as the possibility of DLC support and voice chat. Unfortunately the game’s director, Sakurai has stated driven the dagger through our hearts:

“No. There are no characters that can be unlocked via connecting to WiiConnect24 or interacting in that fashion. And I may be mistaken here, but the Wii doesn’t have a hard drive – it’s a disc-based system – so I don’t think we’ll be doing that, I don’t think it’s going to happen.”

I guess we’ll have to make the best with all the characters that we already have. Also, while director Masahiro Sakurai wanted both voice and keyboard chat for the game, it looks as Nintendo’s iron fist effectively smashed any hopes of that feature. If we plan on “smack talkin’,” three-way calling seems to be the best option. Or, you know, playing in the same room.

I hate to admit it, but I completely agree with you robertj15..

Especially with Sakurai, why on earth would you limit online play because you thought it would be better with less features? It shouldn't be Sakurai's call. Of course people will want leader boards and a ridiculous amount of stats. Some people live off of the stuff.

Personally, I don't really care, I would spend maybe a minute every time I played to check up on it. But it's an opportunity missed for sure, and a disappointment for a lot of people.

The whole thing with voice chat is annoying, but I wouldn't count out support later on. It all depends on how successful the headset is when Nintendo launches it. That and DLC. If Mario Kart's DLC starts earning the big N a bunch of cash, they might reconsider some extra stuff for Brawl.

Or we could always sign onto xbox live for voice chat hahaha...

Yeah, Ninty's online strategy sucks. They should have a service that matches XBox Live before they make us pay money.

I can't stand Nintendo and their approach to online play. Why wouldn't you want to talk to other people? Is it really that hard to implement a voice chat system?

They're sitting there making millions, one would think they'd be aiming to improve online play, but no, they offer some pay-per-game service that is going to be horrific.

Sorry, Nintendo, but I'm tired of you.
